TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (1 Timothy 4:12-16)
The book of First Timothy in the Bible is a letter from the Apostle Paul to a young minister. Paul’s advice to Timothy is also good advice today for modern followers of Jesus, as well. In today’s scripture, Paul urges Timothy to set an example in five ways: In speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Worship is also important in this epistle, as Paul advises Timothy to devote himself to preaching, teaching, and the public reading of scripture.
This young church leader is also advised to exercise his talents and gifts for the Lord, and to pay attention to his lifestyle and his doctrine. Timothy is assured that if he follows these instructions he will be successful, saved, and a powerful influence in the lives of others. These are great instructions for us in the twenty-first century, also. As you read our focal verses for today, pray that your lips, lifestyle, and loving attitude will lead others to follow Jesus Christ. Pray that, even today, you can accomplish something eternal in God’s Kingdom.
