WHEN GOD GETS WEIRD
Joshua 10:12-14
12 "On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.' 13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!" Joshua 10:12-14
Discover It
There are moments in our walk with God when things don't make sense—when God gets "weird." And our scripture for today recounts one such moment. In the heat of battle, Joshua prayed for the sun to stand still, and it did. The natural order was disrupted in a miraculous way to fulfill God's purpose for His people. This passage reminds us that God is different than we are. That his ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). When we encounter situations where God's actions or instructions seem bizarre or beyond our understanding, this is an opportunity to trust Him more fully. Joshua's faith and bold prayer demonstrate his unwavering belief in God's power and purpose. The extraordinary event of the sun standing still was a testament to God's sovereignty and His willingness to intervene in human affairs in unprecedented ways.
Ask It
1. Have you ever experienced a moment when God seemed to act in a "weird" or unexpected way in your life? How did you respond?
2. What can we learn from Joshua's bold prayer and faith in God's power to intervene?
3. How can we cultivate trust in God even when His ways are beyond our understanding?
Live It
1. Be ready! God usually acts in ways that are consistent with his created order. But be ready for the miraculous – those times when the Lord acts in ways that defy our logic. So, be ready for God to sometimes prod you out of your comfort zone and be willing to follow Him as he leads.
2. Realize that whatever the Lord calls you to do, He will always supply the resources to accomplish it. Whether in normal or “weird” ways, He will give you what you need to do His will.
3. Finally, be alert to the “everyday miracles” that God visits you with each day. A baby’s cry, the changing seasons, the vastness of our universe, the tiny-ness of an atom. These are miracles the Lord gives us. So never lose the wonder of it all!
Pray It
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your mighty power and Your willingness to act on our behalf. Help us to trust You completely, even when Your ways are beyond our understanding. Strengthen our faith like Joshua's, so that we may boldly pray and act according to Your will. Guide us in all our endeavors and help us to see Your hand at work in every situation. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
