"MORE THAN GOLD"
Matthew 2:11
“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
Discover It
The story of the Magi visiting the Christ child is a powerful reminder of the value of worship and devotion. The wise men brought costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh; treasures fit for a king. But their greatest gift wasn’t the material offerings—it was their worship and recognition of Jesus as King. In the same way, God desires our hearts more than anything we can give. So, as we move from Christmas to a new year, reflect on how you and your family honor Jesus with gifts that are more valuable than gold: our love, faith, and obedience.
Ask It
1. Why do you think the wise men traveled so far to see Jesus? What does their journey teach us about seeking Christ?
2. How might the gifts of gold, frankincense point to various aspects of Jesus’ identity and mission? (Hint – In the Bible, gold represents royalty, incense represented divinity, and myrrh was a burial spice)
3. What are some “gifts” you can offer Jesus that don’t come from a store? How can our family worship Jesus together, like the wise men did?
Live It
1. Create a "treasure box" where you write down ways you want to honor Jesus this week (e.g., acts of kindness, prayer, or helping others). At the end of the week, reflect on how these offerings brought glory to God.
2. Plan a time where you and your family sing songs, read Scripture, and pray together. Make it a moment to focus on Jesus. Give Him the gift of worship!
3. Identify a person or group in need and find a way to serve them as a family. Use this as a way to give a gift to Jesus by caring for the people He loves.
Pray It
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the greatest gift of all. Like the wise men, we want to bring You our very best, not just in what we give but in how we live. Help us to honor Jesus with our love, faith, and obedience every day. May our lives reflect the joy and wonder of knowing Him as our Savior and King. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
